Across
the Pond Bulldog Show News UKEuropean Correspondant for Sourmug Magazine now sadly out of production ,this article was to be number 11 by the Author Vicky Collins Across the Pond……………March2004 Vicky Collins My litter of puppies mentioned last time turned out to be three, we lost a
female early and every breeders nightmare ‘fading puppy syndrome’ was diagnosed,
this meant I had to hand rear them over the Christmas period ,hence my decision
not to breed again until the Autumn this year ,we are looking forward to a
summer of being able to attend the outdoor shows, and entering our puppies Genie
and Sorciere, now 8 months, also Minnie pictured , maybe staying at
some show grounds with our caravan [trailer] and reporting for Sourmug as usual
.
The early part of the year pre -Crufts is fairly quiet in the show world, several smaller clubs have open shows and there are just a couple of championship shows. .January saw the London Bulldog Societies Championship show , the Judge of the day was Mr B Taylor (Bramor)his main winners were Margaret Goodwin’s Britishpride Missonni,Bitch CC and Best In Show ,Kevin Davis’s Mystyle Madonna Reserve Bitch CC , Davis’s Ch Mex & Ch Captain Hudson with Mystyle Dog CC, Dean Hegarty’s Ch. Medbull Earth Mover J.W Reserve Dog CC and Best Puppy in Show was Margaret Goodwin’s Britishpride Cavalli. Next was the Manchester Dog Show Society [all breeds ] and it was the first time Dawn Mantle of the Dawnstar Kennel awarded CC’s to Bulldogs ,her Best of Breed ,Dog CC winner went on to make number 3 in the Utility Group It was Terlingfair Lord Argyil Mystyle owned by Kevin Davies ,The reserve dog CC went to Sue Bush’s Praetorian Parnassus [JW] Bitch CC went to Margaret Goodwin’s Britishpride Fendi ,the Reserve CC to Peter and Jean Booths Hobtop Calypso, again Best Puppy was Goodwin’s Britishpride Cavelli. Next we had two Breed Club Open shows , Paul and Pauline Reynolds homebred
,red and white dog ,Biddle Believe in the Truth [by Iceglint I’m Spike] went
Best in Show at both ,they were the Manchester & Counties Bulldog Club - Judge
Mrs. Val Carson (Carsvale) and the Rochdale & District .Bulldog Club – Judged by
Mr Clive Lunt (Louarne). Next The Bulldog Club of Wales held their Championship Show ,and invited Morano Maltagliati from Italy who gave his Best in Show to Sue Bush’s Praetorian Parnassus JW [his second CC only 1 to go !!!] the Bitch CC to Davis’s Mystyle Madonna, reserve DCC to Davidson’s Big Daddy at Brampton, Reserve Bitch CC to Goodwin’s Britishpride Cavalli, Davis’sMystyle All That Jazz was Best Puppy in Show
The excitement to the countdown to Crufts always begins with the Bulldog Inc Championship show the weekend before, held at Luton its a big event on the calendar visited by many foreign breed Enthusiasts, many from the USA ,I met up with Richard Seeno, and had an interesting time by the ringside talking with Betty Davey ,and her travelling companion Jill Lang , a very different perspective she put on the exhibits, as you probably know this lady painted some dogs for the BCA’sHall Of Fame , so we spent the show discussing the proportions of the exhibits ,she told me she liked the British heads and jaws very much . This year the show was judged by Mrs Judith Dawes whose famous Outdoors Kennel s were started by her parents Dora and George Wakefield. These are now carried on by Judith and her husband Brian She has judged the breed in Spain, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Holland and Japan. She also award's CC in Bichon Frise and is author of the top selling book "The Pet Owners Guide To The Bulldog." Judith’s Best in Show was Dean Hegarty’s Ch Earthmover and her Reserve was Wilton and Savages Sobeloved Forever Noble, Bitch Cc winner was again Ch Mystyle Madonna and the Reserve bitch was Fordfantasy Devon Lilly, Best Puppy in Show was Mystyle All That Jazz Ocobo . Although it was a bitterly cold day with heavy snow forecast it didn’t mar the attendance as the ringside was packed for most of the day with breed watchers! In the interval an unusual performance was seen as an obedience dog performed a few tricks, he got a good round of applause as most of the Bulldogs in the UK don’t do obedience [in my own time !!] is most peoples experience so they got a good cheer from the audience. Crufts 2004……………………………………… This year was the 101st Crufts Show , 21622 pedigree dogs competed, 205 of them bulldogs with 13 exhibits from overseas ,our Judge was Stephan Sinko [Slovenia]it is unusual for a foreign judge to have this honour of judging Crufts as its deemed by many to be the pinnacle of a judges career to be asked to do this prestigious show it raised a few eyebrows when it was announced. However Mr Sinko Kennel name ‘Jubilee’ is a well qualified breed Specialist whose own kennel founded over 30 years ago was based on the famous British kennel Merriveen. He judges throughout Europe and is well respected ,and did his job very methodically, making notes as he judged as he would in Europe[we don’t do this here normally ]he was very positive in his placings and made cuts in each class first before choosing his final winners ,his entry was considered large being over 40 more dogs than last year and his judging was bought forward to 8.30 am to accommodate the large entry. He created an exciting ringside atmosphere ,his final choosing of the main winners were full of suspense as he ran the dogs around the ring several times before pulling out his final placings ,Davis & Torres Ch./Mex Ch Captain Hudson with Mystyle Best Dog and Best of Breed , Goodwin’s Ch Britishpride Missoni Best Bitch and Brighton’s Balfour Frank Mitchell Best Puppy . Foreign visitors were in abundance, nice to see Brenda Newcombe making her first visit to England .Lillian Tiffany was in town as she is judging the Birmingham and Midland counties show on the 13th March .
